As has been reported widely, the “Microsoft Blaster” worm is scheduled to attempt an attack on Microsoft?s WindowsUpdate Web site on Saturday, Aug. 16. Because the potential impact on campus is unknown, Instructional & Information Technology (I&IT;) strongly recommends that everyone shut their office computers down on Friday, Aug. 15, and leave them off for the weekend. This will help protect the computers and the campus network from the impact of the worm. (By the way, from an energy savings point of view, it?s always a good idea to shut down computers at the end of the day.)
The I&IT; Help Desk will continue to post updates on this issue via PolyCentric and at www.cpp.edu/~helpdesk/news/exploit.htm.
