Map of campus road rehabilitation project |
The Cal Poly Pomona road rehabilitation project began June 30 with the closure of Red Gum Lane. The project, which consists of removal and replacement of the existing street pavement and sub-base material, will reach completion by Wednesday, Nov. 19.
“This project enables the campus to replace the badly deteriorated roadways with new streets capable of supporting the current traffic volume being experienced,” says John Seidel, director of Facilities Design & Construction.
The road rehabilitation will be performed in two phases. Phase 1 will take place June 30 through Sept. 12 and will include the following road closures:
- June 30-July 9 ? Red Gum Lane. All lanes of Red Gum (between the intersection of Kellogg Drive to and including the intersection of Oak Lane) will be closed. Note: Parking lots C & D will be accessible via Kellogg Drive at the parking information booth.
- July 9-28 ? Kellogg Drive. All lanes of Kellogg Drive (between the intersection of Red Gum Lane and University Drive) will be closed. Note: Parking lots C & D will be accessible via Kellogg Drive at the parking information booth and Red Gum Lane entrance.
- July 28-Aug. 19 ? Kellogg and University drives. The two westerly lanes of Kellogg Drive (between University and East Campus drives) and the two northerly lanes of University Drive (from Kellogg Drive to and including the intersection of Oak Lane) will be closed. Note: The two remaining lanes will be left open to provide one-lane in each direction for traffic. To avoid delays: Drivers exiting the 10 freeway east bound to Kellogg Drive may consider using the South Campus Drive off-ramp from the 71 freeway. This exit will lead to the South Campus Drive and Kellogg intersection.
- Aug. 19-29 ? Oak Lane and University Drive. All lanes of Oak Lane (between Cypress Lane and University Drive) and the two southerly lanes of University Drive (from Oak Lane to Kellogg Drive) will be closed. Note: The two northerly lanes of University Drive will be open to provide one-lane in each direction for traffic. To avoid delays: Drivers exiting the 10 freeway east bound to Kellogg Drive may consider using the South Campus Drive off-ramp from the 71 freeway. This exit will lead to the South Campus Drive and Kellogg intersection.
- Aug. 29-Sept. 12 ? Kellogg and East Campus drives. The two easterly lanes of Kellogg Drive (from University to East Campus drives) and both lanes of East Campus Drive (from Kellogg to South Campus drives) will be closed. To avoid delays: Drivers exiting the 10 freeway east bound to Kellogg Drive may consider using the South Campus Drive off-ramp from the 71 freeway. This exit will lead to the South Campus Drive and Kellogg intersection.
Phase 2 will take place from Sept. 12 through Oct. 28 and will include the following road closures:
- Sept. 12-Oct. 15 ? Kellogg Drive. The two northerly lanes of Kellogg Drive (from Red Gum Lane to South Campus Drive) will be closed. Note: The two remaining lanes will be left open to provide one-lane in each direction for traffic. To avoid delays: Drivers entering campus from Temple Avenue may consider using the University Drive entrance off Temple Avenue.
- Oct. 16-28 ? Kellogg Drive. The two southerly lanes of Kellogg Drive (from Red Gum Lane to South Campus Drive) will be closed. Note: The two remaining lanes will be open to provide one-lane in each direction for traffic. To avoid delays: Drivers entering campus from Temple Avenue may consider using the University Drive entrance off Temple Avenue.
Miscellaneous pickup work, cleanup and demobilization will conclude the road rehabilitation project on or before Nov. 19.
The $2.9 million project is funded through a partnership with the federal government, Los Angeles County and Cal Poly Pomona.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works will manage the reconstruction project. The county awarded the job to Vance Corp. in Rialto. Cal Poly Pomona Facilities Design & Construction will be responsible for coordinating the work between the university and the county.
Foothill Transit buses will not use Kellogg Drive for the duration of the rehabilitation. Instead, buses will use Temple Avenue and South Campus Drive for drop-offs and pick-ups.
