Notification of Parking Rate Increases for 2003-04 Academic Year

The second tier of increased parking rates will be implemented effective Summer Quarter 2003. All campus administrators in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP), Confidential Employees (C99s), as well as all employees of the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation Inc., Associated Students Inc. and International Polytechnic High School will begin paying the new rates with their paycheck received on or about August 1. All students will begin paying the new rates effective with the start of Summer Quarter.

State of California employees that are represented by CSU collective bargaining (units 1 though 9) will not experience a rate increase for the 2003-04 year due to their current collective bargaining agreements with the State. Future rates for these employees will be determined as new collective bargaining agreements are approved.

Employees represented by a CSU collective bargaining agreement may continue to purchase visitor/daily permits for $1.50 by going to the Visitor Information Booth and displaying a valid Bronco Access Card that identifies the employee as FACULTY/STAFF. There will be no discounts or refunds on daily permits if this valid ID is not presented at the time of the transaction.

In Spring 2002, the Campus Fee Advisory Committee reviewed and recommended a three-tiered increase to campus parking rates. The fundamental issues that guided these increases include:

1. The urgent need to address the imminent shortfall in available campus parking and the recognition that current rates are not adequate to fund the future needs for parking spaces on the campus. Parking fees on the campus have remained unchanged since 1989 (13 years). They currently rank amongst the lowest in the CSU system.

2.The need to create additional campus transportation routes to support the current trams and shuttles. The Parking Revenue Fund finances the operation of the campus trams and shuttles without financial support from the General Fund.

With the first tier of parking rate increases in place, there has been significant progress to address both of these issues. Planning workshops began in January on a 2,000-car parking garage that is scheduled to open Fall 2005. Several sites are being evaluated in the vicinity of Lot F. In addition, a 200-car expansion of Lot M is scheduled to open for Fall 2003.

The campus transportation system is also slated for several upgrades for Fall 2003. All current campus trams and buses will be replaced with new and modern shuttle buses. These climate-controlled shuttles will offer quicker and more frequent service to a large portion of the campus. Look for revised shuttle routes and service hours in the campus mail and on PolyCentric in late Spring Quarter.
