It?s a double dose of paradise for the Cal Poly Pomona men?s basketball team, which learned Monday they?ll be heading to Hawaii to take part in the 2003 West Regional after having earned their first NCAA Division II postseason berth since 1976.
The Broncos, 20-7 this season, are the No. 4 seed in the eight-team regional, hosted by top-seeded BYU-Hawaii at Laie, Hawaii. Coach Greg Kamansky?s team will open play Friday with a first-round matchup against No. 5 seed Alaska Fairbanks (20-7), scheduled for an 8 p.m. (PST) tip-off in the 4,500-seat Cannon Activities Center.
Cal Poly Pomona used a 67-62 victory at Cal State Bakersfield in Saturday night?s regular season finale to clinch sole possession of second place in the CCAA standings and record the program?s first 20-win season since 1981. This is only the fourth NCAA postseason appearance by the men?s basketball team.
In all, four CCAA teams earned playoff berths in the regional. Conference champion Cal State San Bernardino (21-6) is the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Sonoma State (18-9) in Friday?s first round, while eighth seed Cal State Bakersfield (19-8) must battle host BYU-Hawaii. The other first-round game features No. 3 Humboldt State (22-5) against No. 6 Hawaii-Hilo (18-9).
An opening victory over Alaska Fairbanks advances the Broncos to Saturday?s regional semifinal, where they would face the winner of Friday?s BYU-Hawaii/Cal State Bakersfield showdown in a 9:30 p.m. (PST) start. The regional title game will be played at 9 p.m. (PST) Monday, with that winner advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite 8 March 26-29 at Lakeland, Fla.
