Professor James L. Wood, from the sociology department at San Diego State University, will speak on Intellectual Property and Distance Learning: Which Policy to Chose? from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10 in the Silverwood Room, University Union. The event is sponsored by CFA and IIT. With the advent of widespread use of the Internet to convey information, there has been considerable interest in formulating college and university policies concerning intellectual property (IP), especially as it relates to distance learning (DL). When professors' lecturers are put on the Internet to be distributed to potentially numerous students at a physical distance from the academic point of origin, who owns and controls the lectures and the courses they comprise? Two approaches to IP and DL policy formation will be examined, the preferable policy will be indicated. Refreshments will be served.
