Stephen V. Whaley, a longtime English professor, died of a heart attack on Oct. 1 at San Antonio Community Hospital. Whaley, 59, was a 30-year employee of Cal Poly Pomona. He earned a Ph.D. in Literature from State University of New York at Buffalo, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army?s Special Services. Whaley was born in Troy, N.Y., but lived in Alta Loma for the past 30 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the California State Sheriff's Association, a poetry group and Writers of the Future.
Whaley is survived by two daughters, Robyn Ruth Whaley and Susan Kay Correira; a sister, Marilyn Drichas; and two grandchildren, Adam Christopher and Bryan Correira. He is preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Elizabeth Whaley.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Stone Chapel in Upland. Burial will be at 10 a,m, Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Riverside National Cemetery. The English & Foreign Languages department is planning a memorial fund in honor of Whaley.
