Cal Poly Pomona freshman Mark Batres captured first place in the CCAA Men?s Cross Country championship Saturday, Oct. 26, in Bakersfield, while leading the Broncos to a third-place team finish. Batres set a new course record, finishing the 8K course in 24:52:31.
The 18-year-old Rowland Heights resident is the first individual cross country conference champion from Cal Poly Pomona since Steve Perez in 1985. Batres, a graduate of Bosco Tech High School, was named both CCAA Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
The Bronco men?s team finished third at the conference meet, behind Chico State and UC Davis and just ahead of fourth-place UC San Diego. The women?s team finished sixth.
Both the men?s and women?s cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Division II West Regionals on Nov. 9 in Fresno.
