Podcasts have never been more popular. Accordingly, Cal Poly Pomona has a growing list of podcast series produced by faculty, students and staff from various departments.
Below are summaries of some of the podcasts currently being produced by the CPP community, the topics of which range from engineering deep dives to an inside look at the student-run newspaper on campus, The Poly Post, to discussion about the evolution of education.
CEIS Podcast
With Dean Jeff Passe
This podcast is hosted by the Dean of the College of Education and Integrative Studies and there are currently 40 episodes that have already aired, each about 30 minutes long. Each episode can be found on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and TuneIn.
This podcast offers a videocast component as well. Episodes can be found on YouTube, which allows viewers to watch the entire conversation play out in front of them.
The focus of this podcast is discussion of a range of programs within the College of Education and Integrative Studies. Conversations with both faculty members and students evaluate how different programs benefit students in unique ways.
The first episode of this podcast discusses the evolution of the educational field to a less confining version of itself.
Engineering Student Experience Podcast
With Paul Nissenson
This podcast is hosted by Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Paul Nissenson. There are 10 existing episodes, ranging from 20 to 70 minutes in length that can all be found on PodBean.
The topics range from the challenges and rewards of being an engineering student, to engineering career paths, and the differences between engineering disciplines.
There are interviews with faculty, accomplished students, and alumni from Cal Poly Pomona in addition to solo episodes revolving around the more professional side of college life. This podcast is aimed at current engineering students as well as potential future students considering a career in engineering disciplines.
In the first episode, Nissenson interviews CPP alumni from the class of 2014 about their current professions in the world of mechanical engineering.
Learn Through Discovery
Uncharted Horizons
This is the official Cal Poly Pomona podcast focuses on “Signature Polytechnic Experiences,” which are hands-on approaches using knowledge to make a meaningful impact. There are currently four episodes available on SoundCloud, each about 10 minutes long.
The focus of this podcast is to hold discussions with professors, librarians, and other faculty about the importance of research in a myriad of professional fields. The areas of research and discussion in this podcast range from human behavior, consumer behavior and preferences, social-cultural political issues, and Amerindian studies.
The first episode unwraps a librarian’s perspective of students’ need for information and delves into the vast world of research. It explores research that librarians do themselves.
The Poly Pod
With Nick Talamante and Andy Foreman
This podcast is produced by students who are affiliated with The Poly Post, our student-run campus newspaper. This podcast has three episodes so far, each about 45 minutes long, and can be found on YouTube. New episodes will be released every week and guests may be featured later on in the series.
This podcast revolves around discussion of popular articles from The Poly Post. The hosts provide an insider’s perspective on how their stories were developed and discuss the implications of the news about which they’ve written. Some of the stories they write have to do with events on campus, making this podcast is very useful to students who would like to stay informed about campus activity.
The first episode provides a quick rundown of what to expect from the podcast and introduces the hosts. The hosts then discuss their favorite articles in the most recent edition of The Poly Post.
