The Youth and Family Club of Pomona Valley presented University President Soraya M. Coley with an award on Friday in recognition of her commitment to education and dedication to providing opportunities for all youth.

Business, community and nonprofit leaders attended the ceremony for the Community Impact Award at the Sheraton Pomona Fairplex, which also served as a fund-raising event for the club.

The relationship between Cal Poly Pomona and the Youth and Family Club, formerly the Boys and Girls Club, has deep roots. A number of Cal Poly Pomona students belong to the club, and the university serves as a partner and contributor to its efforts.

During her acceptance remarks, President Coley acknowledged the shared goal of the university and the club to empower young people.

“As president of Cal Poly Pomona, I see the many ways in which a solid start can shape a young person’s future,” she said. “My husband Ron and I both know personally how education and community can open the doors of opportunity – because they were opened for us. We had big dreams, and as I tell my students all the time, I want them to also dream big.”

President Coley also noted that the guidance provided by the club is an integral part of starting an individual down the path to higher education. The Youth and Family Club offers programs on a variety of topics, including education, leadership, health, recreation and life skills.
