Cal Poly Pomona will host the 99th annual Pacific Division Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in June 2018 This is the first time that this conference is being held at Cal Poly Pomona.
The AAAS is the oldest and largest general scientific society in the United States and publishes the Science family of journals, with Science being one of the premier scientific journals in the world. The Pacific Division includes AAAS members in the western U.S., the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, and most countries that bound the Pacific Rim.
Among the goals of the AAAS are enhancing communication among scientists, engineers and the public: promoting and defending the integrity of science and its use; and fostering education in science and technology for everyone.
The meeting will include technical sessions (e.g. symposia, contributed papers and posters, workshops), public lectures, educational field trips and opportunities for networking, as well as the Third Annual Maker Exhibit of projects being assembled in order to solve a variety of challenges and problems. This conference offers a platform for a wide range of science and science-related disciplines as seen from the many sections of the division shown below:
agriculture, food, and renewable resources; anthropology and archaeology; atmospheric and hydrospheric sciences; cell and molecular biology; chemistry and biochemistry; computer and information sciences; earth sciences; ecology, environmental sciences, and sustainability; education (science and technology); engineering, technology, and applied sciences; evolution, organismal biology, and biodiversity; general and interdisciplinary; history and philosophy of science; materials science; mathematics; physics; psychology; science and the arts and humanities; and social, economic, and political sciences.
Professor Vilupanur Ravi, chair of Chemical & Materials Engineering, is the current president of the Pacific Division. He invites faculty across campus to make use of this opportunity to showcase their work. Please contact him at vravi@cpp.edu if you are interested in organizing a symposium, workshop or field trip as soon as possible.
