Have you ever dreamed of designing a Rose Parade float? Perhaps you love to tell stories or draw fanciful images.
The Cal Poly Universities Rose Float team is seeking design ideas for their 2018 Rose Parade entry, and your idea could be brought to life. The winner will receive $500 or two Rose Bowl tickets.
The 2018 parade theme is “Making a Difference.” Design hints include showing the power of kindness, acting without reservation, or how change starts with a single act.
Entries should be a black and white sketch, with a maximum size of 11 inches by 17 inches, or a two-to-three sentence explanation of concept. Entries should illustrate or describe an idea rather than a finished design. Animation ideas are welcome.
Submissions should include the contestant’s name, phone number and email address. Digital copies should be emailed to CalPolyRoseFloat1949@gmail.com, with the subject line “2018 Concept.” Hand-drawn designs should be submitted to Cal Poly Pomona, Dean of Students, Building 26, Room 110, 3801 W. Temple Ave. Pomona, CA 91768.
The deadline is Friday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m. There is no limit on the number of entries per person.
Cal Poly Universities’ Rose Floats are known for colorful characters and animation. The floats are built by students from Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Recent awards include the 2017 Founders’ Trophy for the most beautiful float built and decorated by volunteers and the 2016 Lathrop K. Leishman Award for Most Beautiful Non-Commercial Float.
