An innovative educator who works with colleges, universities and higher education systems across North America will be the guest speaker at Cal Poly Pomona’s annual Fall Conference.
Thomas Carey, executive in residence for teaching and learning innovation for higher education systems in British Columbia and Ontario, Canada, will speak at Convocation on Monday, Sept. 19. He will discuss the university’s vision, serving future needs of students, and differentiated excellence in teaching and learning. The conference kicks off at 8:30 a.m. in the Ursa Major Suite of the Bronco Student Center.

“It is an honor to have Dr. Carey be a part of Cal Poly Pomona’s fall Convocation,” says University President Soraya M. Coley. “He is an outside-of-the-box educator whose success in leadership, faculty collaboration, and the development of high-quality teaching and learning environments for undergraduate students is well-respected.”
Carey also serves as a research professor in the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education at San Diego State University. His previous roles in California have included senior partner at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and chief learning officer for the MERLOT Open Ed Resource Network. In his faculty career, Carey was a tenured professor in computer science and a visiting scientist at the IBM Center for Advanced Studies in Toronto.
Convocation will begin with President Coley’s State of the University address. The annual Excellence in Service and Achievement Awards is set for 2 p.m., followed by a reception at 4:30 p.m. at the Manor House.
The four-day conference includes an Academic Affairs Forum, workshops and BroncoFusion.
