Cal Poly Universities Seek Rose Float Designs for 2017 Entry

Posted on January 28, 2016

Jerica Hurtado, a business major from Cal Poly Pomona, applies screening to a portion of the Cal Poly Universities 2016 Rose Float, “Sweet Shenanigans.”

Have you dreamed about designing a Rose Parade float?

The Cal Poly Universities Rose Float team is seeking design ideas for the 2017 Rose Parade entry. The winner will receive $500 or two Rose Bowl tickets.

The theme, “Echoes of Success,” celebrates people, institutions and organizations that have been instrumental in “helping others achieve success … the people and cultures that lend us a hand in reaching our destination.”

Entries should be a two- or three-sentence explanation of the concept or a black and white sketch that is 11 inches by 17 inches. Entries should describe an idea rather than a finished design. Animation ideas are welcome.

Submissions should include the contestant’s name, phone number and email. Digital copies should be emailed to CalPolyRoseFloat1949@gmail.com, with the subject line “2017 CONCEPT.” Hand-drawn designs should be submitted to Cal Poly Rose Float, Dean of Students, Building 26, Room 110, 3801 W. Temple Ave. Pomona, CA 91768.

The deadline is Friday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m. There is no limit on the number of entries per person.

Cal Poly Universities’ floats are well-known for colorful characters and animation. The float team consisting of students from Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo won the Lathrop K. Leishman Award for Most Beautiful Non-Commercial Float in both the 2015 and 2016 Rose Parades.
