Cal Poly Pomona’s Formula SAE racing and design team has placed ninth in an international competition held in Germany.
The team’s performance at the Formula Student Germany competition was the best by a California university and places it behind only two other U.S. teams — Oregon State University and University of Washington.
The competition requires teams to design and build their own car styled after those used in Formula 1 racing. The teams are judged on racing performance, technical aspects, documentation and presentations to panels of judges.
Adviser Cliff Stover says the team performed particularly well, placing first, in the portion of the competition that evaluates how well the team made use of the resources available to it.
“Our students are of course always on a tight budget, so this event was very real to our group, where they are judged on cost estimations, manufacturing techniques and processes,” he says.
Prior to the team’s showing in Germany, it participated and placed highly in events held in Nebraska in June, and in Michigan in May.
