Semester conversion efforts, the All-Steinway School Initiative, and students excelling in charitable fundraising, athletics and competitions are the subjects that top President Ortiz’s weekly video update.
Professor Francelina Neto, chair of the civil engineering department, will head the Semester Conversion Initiative that will move Cal Poly Pomona from the quarter system to the semester format by fall 2017. Students and faculty members can participate in the process by serving on a committee.
The president also recognized former engineering students Perry and Paul Tollett for supporting the College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences’ All-Steinway School Initiative. The initiative will raise money to purchase 29 Steinway pianos and move Cal Poly Pomona into an elite category of conservatories and universities that exclusively use Steinways. The Tollett brothers are the organizers behind the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, and the Glass House and Fox Theater in Pomona.
- The Greek community raised more than $42,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during its annual philanthropic event, “Up ‘Til Dawn.” The amount is double what it raised last year.
- Two teams of plant science students competed in the national Collegiate Turf Bowl, which tested participants on knowledge that successful golf course superintendents would need. One team placed fourth out of 71 teams, while the other finished 17th.
- Playoffs start this Friday for the nationally ranked men’s and women’s basketball teams. The men’s team plays at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, with the women playing at 5:30 p.m. Free tickets and bus transportation are available for Cal Poly Pomona students, but the supply is limited.
- From noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, students from a wide range of disciplines will give presentations in the University Library about their research projects. The top 10 students will participate in the CSU Student Research Competition in May.
