Police Clear University Village in Search for Suspect

Posted on December 6, 2013

A test of the Safety Alert System is scheduled for Thursday, April 16.
A test of the Safety Alert System is scheduled for Thursday, April 16.

Police cleared University Village and the vicinity Wednesday evening after searching for a burglary suspect.

The incident began when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 2:54 p.m. call reporting a residential burglary in Walnut, Sgt. Mark Saldecke said. A deputy spotted a vehicle on Temple Avenue matching the description of the suspects and began pursuing it, he said.

The vehicle turned onto Valley Boulevard, striking a car, and pulled into a mobile home park near University Village, Saldecke said. The suspects fled on foot, and two were taken into custody shortly afterward. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies described the third suspect as a black man wearing a dirty white shirt due to early witness reports. They later updated the description to a Hispanic male in a brown shirt and blue jeans.

The university issued a public safety alert to the campus community via telephone, email, social media and notices on all university computers. Residents at University Village were advised to shelter in place and not to apprehend or approach the suspect.

University Police cleared the area after conducting a unit-by-unit search of the village for the suspect, who is believed to have left the campus.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the burglary.
