Safety Alert Test on Feb. 28

Thumbnail image for safetyalert.jpgAll faculty, staff and students are urged to prepare for a test of Cal Poly Pomona’s Safety Alert system on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The test will begin around 11:50 a.m. Expect a brief test message on your cell, home and office phones, as well as an email. The campus community is urged to notify those who share your home number, particularly if their first language is not English.

During an emergency or urgent situation, the Safety Alert system simultaneously sends out messages to phones, email, text/SMS and TTY/TDD devices. In order to receive the messages, faculty, staff and students need to provide up-to-date contact information in BroncoDirect.

Updating contact information is a simple process that takes less than five minutes.

  • Log onto BroncoDirect (https://broncodirect.cms.cpp.edu/) and click on “Personal Information Summary” on the left-hand menu.
  • If your phone numbers — office, home and cellular — are not listed or are incorrect, choose “Change phone numbers.”
  • When adding a new number, click on “Add a Phone Number,” and specify the type of phone. If your mobile phone is not specified as “Cellular,” you will not be able to receive text messages, which is one of the fastest ways to reach you in an emergency.
  • Click “Save” to finish.

If you are adding a cell phone number into BroncoDirect for the first time, you may be asked to confirm that you want to receive text messages from the Safety Alert.

The Personal Information Summary page will also allow users to update email addresses and emergency contacts.

The university tests the Safety Alert system once during the fall, winter and spring quarters to familiarize the campus community with this important communication vehicle, as well as to train staff in using the system. The alerts are sent only during emergencies and scheduled tests, and never for routine messages. The contact information you provide in BroncoDirect will remain confidential and will not be released outside of the university.

To learn more about the campus Emergency Plan, read the Summary and Self-Help Guide at www.dsa.cpp.edu/police/emergencyplan.asp.
