Rivera, Garcia Featured on All-Region Second Team

Helping the women’s soccer team to its first overall winning record since 2007, Angela Garcia and Jennifer Rivera secured NCAA Division II All-West Region honors for their 2011 performances.

The Broncos finished with an overall mark of 8-6-4 while going 6-6-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play and narrowly missing a berth into the NCAA D-II postseason. CPP is one of six teams that had two or more players on the All-West Region squads announced Wednesday, after a vote of the region’s Sports Information Directors.

Rivera demonstrated her scoring and passing skills in 2011 as she led the team in assists with seven and was tied for third in goals with three. The Broncos never lost a game in which she scored, and both of the games that the Broncos won in which she scored a goal were game-winners, including the 1-0 win at Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 7. After transferring from Mt. San Antonio College, the senior midfielder totaled 12 goals and eight assists during her stellar two-year Bronco career.

Garcia shifted from forward to defense this past year and still used her quickness to generate scoring chances for the Broncos. The junior from Hanford, Calif., finished the season with eight points, including three goals and two assists. Garcia’s best statistical performance came against Grand Canyon on Sept. 1, in which she scored a goal and had an assist en route to a 4-2 victory.
