Leadership Changes in the College of the Extended University

Uei-Jiun ¿U.J.¿ Fan

Uei-Jiun ¿U.J.¿ Fan, dean of the College of Extended University (CEU) since 2008, has announced his resignation, effective Sept. 16. A former associate dean in the College of Engineering, Dr. Fan will return to join the faculty in the mechanical engineering department. Interim leadership for the CEU is expected to be announced next week.

¿This was not an easy decision,¿ Fan says. ¿We have a talented cadre of staff in the CEU who continue to identify new opportunities for the university. I hope I am leaving the college in a better place and wish to thank all of them, as well as Provost denBoer, for their support over the past few years.¿

Fan enjoys an extensive background in engineering, having also served as director of engineering graduate studies and research. He directed the 2002 International Space University Summer Session for scholars, engineers and government representatives. Fan also led efforts to integrate service-learning activities into the engineering curriculum and received a grant from the National Science Foundation in support of the project.

As dean of CEU, Fan was instrumental in enhancing the number of special session degree and certificate programs, including the Master of Interior Architecture Program (with the College of Environmental Design and the UCLA Extension) and the Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders Program (with the College of Education and Integrated Studies). In addition, CEU recently renewed a $50,000 grant to develop a Clean Energy Program.

¿U.J. has done a great job over the past three years,¿ says Provost Marten denBoer. ¿His breadth of experience and international acumen created new business relationships for the college. He is also an exceptional member of our academy, and we are fortunate that he will continue to serve the students of Cal Poly Pomona.¿

The College of the Extended University provides dynamic continuing education programs to working professionals and traditional students in new and innovative ways. The college offers more than 1,500 courses, ranging from credit courses and degree programs to business and management, trade and technical certificates, as well as personal enrichment classes.
