Music Department Presents 3 Piano Events

Music Professor Nadia Shpachenko

Music Professor Nadia Shpachenko continues her collaborations with distinguished guest artists at the Chamber Music Festival on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Shpachenko, violinist Tina Chang Qu and cellist Marek Szpakiewicz will perform piano trios by Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann.

“On the program are rarely performed romantic gems — piano trios in G minor by Chopin and Schumann in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the composers’ births,” Shpachenko says. “This concert will raise funds for piano scholarships.”

The chamber music performance is one of three piano events sponsored by the music department during the winter quarter.

On Feb. 22, renowned pianist and recording artist John Perry will lead a free master class for students who want to receive constructive criticism and instruction. Perry, a professor at USC, will critique solo and piano ensemble performances. The class will be held at the Music Recital Hall.

On March 4, students, faculty, staff and alumni will come together for the annual Phillip Clarke Memorial Piano Scholarship Fundraiser. Each year, the music department raises money for piano scholarships in memory of piano Professor Phillip Clarke, who taught at Cal Poly Pomona for 22 years.

This year’s program includes piano and harpsichord pieces by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, Tchaikovsky and Ravel.

For ticket information or more details, visit the music department website at http://csupomona.tix.com or call the Music Publicity Office at (909) 869-3554.
