Student Newspaper Reports 7 Awards from SPJ Chapter
The Poly Post staff celebrate after winning seven regional awards.

The Poly Post recently won an award for best student newspaper in the region from the Society of Professional Journalists' Inland Southern California Chapter.

Cal Poly Pomona's student-run weekly also took home six individual awards including:

  • Best Sports Story, first place, Joseph Muldoon for “Midnight soccer is perfect setting” from the Oct. 23 issue   
  • Best Sports Photo, first place, Allen Chen for “Basketball layup” from Nov. 27   
  • Best News/Feature photo, second place, Brandon Tan for “Grand Piano” from the Oct. 2 edition.   
  • Best Feature Story, second place (tie), Daniel Tedford for “Shootings raise awareness over campus security” from April 24, 2007   
  • Best Page Layout, second place (tie), Lifestyle page from the Oct. 23 issue   
  • Best Editorial Cartoon/Illustration, third place, Lucio Villa for his Rising Cost of Beer infographic from the Nov. 20 issue.   

The awards were announced during the chapter's annual Excellence in Journalism Awards on May 10 in Riverside.

The Poly Post faced off against several student newspapers in the area, including the University of La Verne's Campus Times and Riverside Community College's Viewpoints.
