Longtime university administrators Les Young and Dave Johnson will be filling new interim roles in the Division of Student Affairs. Young, the associate dean in the College of Agriculture, has been named the interim AVP for Student Services. This position became open with the departure of Jim Norfleet, who left the university to become the vice president for Student Life at the College of New Jersey. Johnson will assume the position of AVP/Dean of Students while Rebecca Gutierrez Keeton is on family leave this fall.
Young brings a distinguished track record of 29 years of experience and leadership at Cal Poly Pomona, including more than 20 years as a faculty member and department chair, as well as the last four as associate dean. As an advocate for student success, his appointment began on July 31st and will run through the 2006-07 academic year. The search for a permanent AVP will begin later this summer.
Johnson, director of Judicial Affairs, has more than 24 years of experience of successful management experience, which included key leadership roles for Associated Students, Inc., Office of Student Life, University Registrar, and University Housing Services prior to his current appointment in Judicial Affairs. He began this assignment on July 24. Gutierrez Keeton is projected to return on Nov. 1.
Also in appointment news: Jean Gipe has been appointed interim associate dean for the College of Agriculture, effective July 31.
