An evening celebrating education and featuring an entertainment legend is planned as Cal Poly Pomona hosts Founders' Celebration 2006: Anka's Back!, on Sunday, March 5, at the Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry.
Cal Poly Pomona's premier social and support event, Founders' Celebration is the university's annual benefit to raise funds for student scholarships and academic enhancement. Since its inception in 1999, Founders Celebration has raised more than $1.5 million. Last year's event netted $305,000 and was attended by nearly 600 university supporters, community leaders, alumni, faculty and staff. This year's event is co-sponsored by the Cal Poly Pomona University Educational Trust (UET) and Collins School alumnus Hae Park and his wife, Shina. The UET manages the universitys $25 million endowment, supporting many fund-raising initiatives including Founders' Celebration.
The evening begins with a hosted reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and a voice auction. A special performance by Paul Anka, the internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter, will highlight the evening. He is back not only in the song charts with his newly released “Rock Swings,” but also at this year's Founders' Celebration for an encore to his dazzling 2003 performance. He is one of few artists to have a record appear on Billboards Top 50 charts for five consecutive decades, and ranks alongside music legends Elvis Presley and the Beatles as one of Billboard Magazines most successful artists ever.
With over 900 songs to his credit (including “Diana,” “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” and “Puppy Love”), Anka's musical compositions are known throughout the world and have been recorded by some of the greatest names in the entertainment industry, including Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Sammy Davis Jr., Wayne Newton, Tom Jones and Engelburt Humperdink.
Anka has achieved success in all entertainment venues: recording, stage, screen and television. He enjoyed five top-20 hits before turning 18, was the first North American pop star to play behind the iron curtain, was elected by the National Academy of Popular Music to The Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has been honored with the French governments Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters.
Now in his sixth decade as a gifted performer and amazing creative talent, Anka continues to entertain his many fans during numerous concert dates throughoutthe world. Last year, the songwriter came out with the newly released “Rock Swings” that combines '80s and '90s rock with songs such as Bon Jovi's “It's My Life,” Pet Shop Boys' “It's a Sin,” and Van Halen's “Jump,” in innovative arrangements including jazz, big band brass and bossa nova.
