Broncos to Head to L.A. for Playoffs


Cal Poly Pomona's volleyball team, fresh off a share of its first California Collegiate Athletic Association title since 1990, has been given the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division II Pacific Region.

The Broncos will open tournament play on Thursday, Nov. 17, at Cal State L.A. against No. 7 seed Central Washington, the co-champions of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be the second of four first-round matches at Cal State L.A.

The winner of the CPP-Central Washington match will face the winner of the No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino-No. 6 BYU-Hawaii contest on Friday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m. The championship match will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m.

All matches will be carried via webcast on the Athletic Web site at www.broncoathletics.com.

Cal Poly Pomona is making consecutive playoff appearances for the first time since 1996-97. The Broncos finished the regular season with a 24-2 record and the .923 winning percentage is the best in the program's history. The Broncos also set a new program standard for conference wins with 16.

The first-round match will be a contest between two nationally-ranked programs. Cal Poly Pomona entered the last week of play with a No. 9 national ranking, while Central Washington (22-4) was ranked 15th.

Ironically, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. both finished the season with identical 24-2 records and had the same schedule as well. The only differences came in matches against No. 3 seed Cal State San Bernardino and No. 5 seed Cal State Bakersfield. The Broncos swept the Coyotes and split with the Roadrunners, while the Golden Eagles split with the Coyotes and swept the Roadrunners.

The CCAA had four of the five top seeds with No. 1 Cal State L.A., No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona, No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino and No. 5 Cal State Bakersfield. The rest of the field includes No. 4 Hawaii Pacific, No. 6 BYU-Hawaii, No. 7 Central Washingtonand No. 8 Seattle Pacific.
