Allen Yong-Chia Lin, a Mechanical Engineering major, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the College of Engineering's Process Simulation computer lab. He was 18 years old and a resident of Rowland Heights.
“This is a sad day for the entire Cal Poly Pomona community,” said Interim Provost Tomas D. Morales. ”It is difficult to put into words the feelings of many faculty, staff and students today, people who cared for him. At this time, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”
Lin was discovered by a custodian in the computer lab (Building 17-2109) at 3:36 a.m. on Nov. 3. The University Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff's departments are investigating the apparent suicide.
The computer lab and its surrounding areas on the east wing's second floor have been cordoned off while the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office and other auxiliary agencies complete their work. This area will be closed throughout Wednesday. Faculty and staff offices are not impacted.
A freshman electrical engineering class, ECE 114 and ECE 114L, scheduled from noon to 2 p.m., in 17-2103, was moved.
Due to the serious nature of the incident, the university is providing counselors through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to support students. The CAPS staff can also provide consultation to faculty and staff on related issues and concerns. CAPS counselors can be reached at (909) 869-3220.
