Changes in Student Affairs – A Special Message from Gary L. Fredericksen

The division of Student Affairs recently underwent some reorganization in programs that impact the campus community.

In collaboration with President Ortiz, I have approved Fred Henderson?s request for a reassignment from his current position as Director of Disabled Student Services. Effective today, he has joined the University Police Department as coordinator of Special Projects & Campus Outreach. In this new role, he will provide leadership and support for several projects and will assist the department in its outreach to and involvement in the campus community.

Catherine Schmitt Whitaker, coordinator of the University Advising Center, has been appointed interim director of Disabled Student Services, effective immediately. She will work closely with the DSS staff, Associate Vice President Jim Norfleet, and other stakeholders to ensure that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in and enjoy the benefits of campus services, programs, and activities. A nationwide search for a permanent director will be launched early in the fall quarter.

During the interim, leadership of the University Advising Center will be provided by Academic Counselor Norma Leon.

Please join me in thanking all of these individuals who are working together in support of our students.

Gary Fredericksen
Interim Vice President for Student Affairs
