Women's Tennis Pair Advances to National Championships

Cal Poly Pomona will be represented in the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships for the first time in several years.

Dehlia Feliz (Jr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and Katrina Holmberg (So., Pukalani, Maui, HI) captured the Division II ITA West Region women?s doubles title with an 8-3 victory over top-seeded Jasmin Dao and Leigh Roberts of UC San Diego Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. Feliz and Holmberg had reached the finals after beating Grand Canyon?s Nikita Bhardwaj and Sarah Mitchell in the semis, 8-4. Dao and Roberts beat UC Davis? Amanda Wise and Ashley Lehman, 8-2.

Cal Poly Pomona head coach Sandy Kriezel said Feliz and Holmberg are the first Cal Poly Pomona players to advance to the Small College National Championships in her six years as Bronco head coach.

Katlin Nagy of Cal State Bakersfield and Brian Swatt of UC San Diego won the singles titles Saturday, while UC San Diego?s Sameer Chopra and Jeff Wilson won the men?s doubles title.

The champions who were crowned Oct. 4 at Cal Poly Pomona will all advance to the national Small College Championships, which will be held Oct. 16-19 at the H.E.B. Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The national championships will include the eight regional champions from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.

Nagy defeated Bhardwaj in the women?s singles championship match, 6-4, 6-1, and concluded the tournament without dropping a set. Nagy, the No. 1 seed, reached the semis earlier Saturday with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dao. Bhardwaj, meanwhile, won a tough three-set match over Feliz in the semis, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Swatt, meanwhile, defeated Chopra in the finals of the men?s singles, 6-4, 7-5. Like Nagy, Swatt, the No. 2 seed, didn?t drop a set in the tourney. Swatt advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UC San Diego teammate Emil Novak. Chopra, meanwhile, advanced to the finals with a default victory over Wilson.

Chopra and Wilson won the men?s double title with an 8-3 win over Swatt and Amir Nejod.
