Campus Warned Against Microsoft E-Mail

A recent e-mail circulating throughout the campus with an attachment that proclaims to be the latest version of Microsoft?s security update should not be opened, as Microsoft has not historically sent e-mail notices regarding patches. The campus community is strongly urged to not make any adjustments to computer systems without the support and guidance of technical team members or the division of Instructional & Information Technology.

The e-mail is addressed to ?Microsoft Client? and reads as follows: ?This is the latest version of security update, the ?October 2003, Cumulative Patch? update, which eliminates all known security vulnerabilities affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express, as well as three new vulnerabilities. Install now to maintain the security of your computer. This update includes the functionality of all previously released patches.?
