Marsha Johnson Evans, president and chief executive officer of the American Red Cross, will be the commencement speaker for the College of Science graduation ceremony on Sunday, June 15.
In all, Cal Poly Pomona?s 2003 commencement schedule will include eight different ceremonies over a three-day span beginning Friday, June 13. Besides Evans, this year?s speakers include a United States congresswoman, an undersecretary at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, three business executives and the co-founder of the Pomona Arts Colony.
Evans, named to her current position in August 2002, oversees the nation?s premier humanitarian service organization. She previously served 29 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1997 at the rank of rear admiral, then spent four years as executive director of the Girl Scouts.
During the past year, the American Red Cross assisted the victims of more than 70,000 disasters, collected and processed 7.2 million blood donations (more than half the nation blood supply), trained nearly 12 million people in lifesaving skills such as first aid and CPR, provided direct assistance to more than half a million military families, and responded to numerous international natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies.
All commencement ceremonies will take place in the University Quad. In addition, commencement for International Polytechnic High School will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16.
